If you opt in to the Gemini app, it will replace your Google Assistant as the primary assistant on the phone. Some Google Assistant voice features aren't available through the Gemini app yet — including controlling media and routines. You can switch back to Google Assistant in settings.

Ratings and reviews

Though a technological marvel, its "stateless memory" makes it an absent-minded genius that will never remember important details about past interactions. This puts it on the user to be extremely organized and mindful index anything that came out of the interaction. It is missing Google's world-class search engine, you cannot easily find any key information from interactions. You can't export the entire transcript. You can only do one response per prompt. ChatGPT can remember & build rapport.

While it's fun to play with, the inability to use it with a lock screen for a hands-free experience while driving ruins it the most. The second is that asking for the time is impossible because it can't use your location data. Even with basic functions, this makes Google assistant a better choice at this time. I do hope Gemini improves, but it can't replace assistant without these abilities. It's been 8 months and the app is the same garbage as before.

I miss the functionality of the old digital assistant it was inappropriate for Google to switch to Gemini before rolling out all its features. Edit: I did try it. It doesn't do what it did in the past, worst it tells me sometimes I can enable it via some plug in and then when I get into it there is no toggle for the alleged plug in!!!!
