Some time has passed since I finished book 12 so I had some difficulty with certain unfamiliar names. The Captain Lacey series was probably my introduction to period mysteries (Holmes not withstanding) and I have since become acquainted with several other notable series, including William Monk, Sebastian St. Cyr, Nell Sweeney, and Alec Halsey. Each has its own commendable point, but what has set the Lacey series apart from the others is the large supporting cast of characters who are memorable for their own complexity (and consistency). I really enjoy the world building in this series, where social interaction between recurring characters is natural rather than necessary. I must applaud the author in creating and maintaining the complexity and consistency of the largest set of recurring characters I have yet to see in the mystery genre. There were moments where I worried Denis or Grenville might devolve into shallower archetypes in this book, but it is my hope that the author will assuage those fears in books to come. All in all, definitely one of the more enjoyable historical mystery series, and I will continue to support new releases in this series.
