The one thing I know when I read a Dana Mentink book is that there will be a lot of action, the characters will be fantastic and the story will be so good that I better block out a significant amount of time because I wont want to put the book down! This book is the beginning of a new series set in the California gold country and it is fantastic! As I said, there is a lot of action. We get to meet the Thorn family and this book introduces us to all of them, but focuses on Barrett. He is a widower and cannot (will not?) forgive the family who killed his wife, though it was accidental. He is a religious man but he still can't forgive because of certain circumstances and you'll have to read the book to find out what they are! So, what happens when he finds a woman (Shelby) locked in a truck of a car on a stormy night and rescues her, only to find out she is part of the family that killed his wife?? Oh, sparks fly, let me tell you!!!! However, as Shelby continues to be targeted by someone dead set on killing her, Barrett seems to feel responsible for her. In fact, his whole family gets involved! I love the Thorn family already and can't wait to see his brothers get their own books. I definitely recommend this book. Start your holidays with it!

Rancher Barrett Thorn has his hands full trying to keep Shelby Arroyo out of harm's way. It seems someone is out to hurt, possibly even kill her, to prevent her from doing her job assessing minerals in a gold mine next to her uncle’s place. Barrett, who is still grieving his wife’s death, rescues Shelby and feels responsible for making sure she stays safe. That is until he learns who she is. Shelby is kin to the man who was responsible for his wife’s death. The grief in his heart for his wife threatens to keep him from continuing to protect Shelby. Will he be able to move past the bitterness and anger for her family to keep Shelby from getting killed herself? In this first book of her new series - Gold Country Cowboy Series – Dana Mentink will keep you digging in from beginning to end. This golden series is starting out as fine gold packed with lots of excitement, with even more to come. I am looking forward to finding out what lies ahead in book two of this fantastic series. *I was given a copy by the author for an honest review. The Review is my own opinion.

Great story! First off, it features one of my favorite romance tropes—the main character fall in love against their will! I like to see the characters get to know each other and then realize they love each other. Then the suspense portion of the story was really well done. There are threats and clues, but who did why is someone trying to scare her away? Such a fun read!
