Nuri is a young boy when his mother dies. Anatomy of a Disappearance is very simply – an excellent read. It is both thoughtful and provocative in a timeless manner. Perhaps most importantly, it is one of the most honest books I’ve ever read. Matar paints a surreal picture with his words, they ebb and flow gently around you and like any master impressionist, there are deep slashes of vibrant color, extreme moments in an otherwise ‘normal’ landscape; these are the moments when Nuri’s otherwise quiet thoughts become shockingly sharp and his soul is bared, ever so briefly. It’s these moments that transform this wonderful book from being ‘good’ to ‘very, very good’. A word of caution, if you’re looking for a read that ties up all the loose ends neatly I wouldn’t suggest you read this. Matar leaves bits of ribbons dangling, they are curled and artfully arranged but they dangle nonetheless.
About the author
Hisham Matar was born in New York City to Libyan parents and spent his childhood first in Tripoli and then in Cairo. His first novel, In the Country of Men, was shortlisted for the Man Booker Prize, the Guardian First Book Award, and the National Book Critics Circle Award. It won six international literary awards, including the Commonwealth Writers’ Prize Best First Book award for Europe and South Asia, the Royal Society of Literature Ondaatje Prize, and the inaugural Arab American Book Award. It has been translated into twenty-eight languages. Matar lives in London and serves as an associate professor at Barnard College in New York City.
