About this ebook

Her reputation ruined by one impetuous mistake, Lady Kyra Sterling lives as a recluse, determined never to make herself vulnerable to love again. Then she meets Rafael, a half-Spanish, half-English war hero.

Hoping to heal his own inner pain, Rafael has come to visit his uncle. He doesn’t expect to strike up friendship with his neighbor, the shy Lady Kyra. But when she offers to help translate his Spanish grandmother's notes and recipes for chocolate, a special bond forms.

Then the man who ruined and jilted Kyra returns, demanding marriage and her dowry. Now Kyra must choose: become vulnerable again and seek Rafael's help, or quietly return to her reclusive life and succumb to a loveless marriage.

I received a copy of this book from eBook Discovery in exchange of my honest review. After losing her sister in a terrible riding accident she believes was her fault, Kyra Pinnell retreats from the world in a cloud of scandal and self-recrimination. Abandoned by her fiance in the wake of a scandal that he managed to escape from unscathed, Kyra learns from bitter experience that men are not to be trusted, especially in matters of the heart. Finding solace only in her paintings of flowers, Kyra's life is filled with lonliness, guilt and self-loathing. One day, Kyra encounters Rafael, the newly returned soldier from the neighboring estate. Harboring hurts of his own surrounding the death of his cousin, Rafael is struggling to come to terms wtih his newly inherited title and status as heir to his uncle's estate. Can Kyra help him heal his own wounds as he helps her heal herself? Will he accept her once he finds out about the scandal surrounding the accident? When figures from their pasts return, will it tear them apart, or bring them closer together? This story advanced along predictable lines, and the dialogue was somewhat stilted. Rafael's obsession with chocolate, meant to be vehicle bonding him to Kyra, ends up being more of a distraction than anything, as so many passages about its history, uses, etc. seem contrived.

About the author

Andrea Pickens created her first book at the age of five—a neatly penciled story about cowboys—however she has since moved on from Westerns to writing about Regency England, a time and place that has captured her imagination ever since she opened the covers of Pride and Prejudice.
