About this ebook

From Sarah Addison Allen, the beloved author of Garden Spells, comes Waking Kate, a story about a woman who soon will face an unforeseen change in her life. One sticky summer day as Kate is waiting for her husband to come home from his bicycle shop, she spots her distinguished neighbor returning from his last day of work after eighty-six years at Atlanta's oldest men's clothing store. Over a cup of butter coffee, he tells Kate a story of love and heartbreak that makes her remember her past, question her present, and wonder what the future will bring.

I was honestly lost throughout this story. Most of what happened seemed to because the story needed it to happen. Kate's actions were somewhat questionable, the man she was talking to disclosed a lot about himself without reason kept breaking the immersion. If the end was justification as to why, that's a pretty bad way to do it.

Sarah Addison Allen weaves a tale that draws you into the mystical events of her characters. Kate is a very sensitive if not magical being who longs for the love and acceptance. In this story she is awakened by the story of an older man who reveals that he was lead to the love of his life by the first man he was infatuated with. This wakes Kate up to actually look at her life and discover they mysteries that lie before her.

I understand that the plot was meant to keep you wondering, and the ending was left up in the air. Unlike the other reviewers, that didn't bother me. It was just poorly written and had several errors in grammar as well as in the description saying the old man worked at the shop for 86 years when in the book it was 68 years. Bottom line is: the book is not worth reading.
