Continued solid page turning work from the master of Scottish crime drama. Rankin weaves together politics, murder, relationships, and the ghosts of Rebus''s past into another compelling chapter in the continued downward spiral of DI John Rebus. When a prospective candidate for the Scottish Parliament is found murdered shortly before the opening of the new Parliament building, John Rebus is left wondering if the killing is associated with another body found on the parliament site that dates to just after the unsuccessful 1979 devolution referendum. Mixed in with this, Rebus has to handle working with an ambitious, backstabbing fellow DI who may have ill intentions towards his protege. While not the absolute best of the Rebus series, this is crisp, compelling, engaging, and murky, offering an Edinburgh that is real, violent, and enticing.
