About this ebook

In this “deftly and originally executed” (Booklist) New York Times bestselling novel, Vaelin Al Sorna must help his Queen reclaim her Realm. Only his enemy has a dangerous new collaborator, one with powers darker than Vaelin has ever encountered…

“The Ally is there, but only ever as a shadow, unexplained catastrophe or murder committed at the behest of a dark vengeful spirit. Sorting truth from myth is often a fruitless task.”

After fighting back from the brink of death, Queen Lyrna is determined to repel the invading Volarian army and regain the independence of the Unified Realm. Except, to accomplish her goals, she must do more than rally her loyal supporters. She must align herself with forces she once found repugnant—those who possess the strange and varied gifts of the Dark—and take the war to her enemy’s doorstep.

Victory rests on the shoulders of Vaelin Al Sorna, now named Battle Lord of the Realm. However, his path is riddled with difficulties. For the Volarian enemy has a new weapon on their side, one that Vaelin must destroy if the Realm is to prevail—a mysterious Ally with the ability to grant unnaturally long life to her servants. And defeating one who cannot be killed is a nearly impossible feat, especially when Vaelin’s blood-song, the mystical power which has made him the epic fighter he is, has gone ominously silent…

What a let down. Read the first one as a stand alone and ignore the other two books. I was so excited for this story. now I'm wishing I could forget everything I've read after Blood Song. I read a theory somewhere that Blood Song must have had a different author. I almost have to believe that Anthony Ryan stole the first book because of how terrible the next two are.

This final book does a marvelous job at wrapping up the stories of our characters. There is absolutely no doubt at the end of this that the journey all our characters embarked on is finished. However, there is a distinct feeling of missing depth and richness to the world. The plot is much more focused on the fights and trials our characters go through reaching their goal, but that is it; no meaningful moments of sombre reflection, no heart-rending confessions or confrontations, and above all no staggering developments regarding the characters or world. In a sense, it seemed Anthony Ryan was content with his characters, and focused the story more on finding resolutiob rather than fleshing them out more. For example: Vaelin Al Sorna and Lyrna Al Nieren. Both characters spent the majority of their scenes maneuvering from one battle to another. It was unmistakeably clear at the end of the book both Vaelin and Lyrna were the same people who we last saw at the end of Book 2.

Good ending to a series that started off very strong. The writing and character development wasn't as well crafted as in the first or second book. Still, very enjoyable and well worth the time spent reading.
