Already being a fan of Gaiman's other work, I got this for something to read while on a plane flight. While the main character is a bit of a pathetic wet flannel (although he does improve later on) all the other major characters, especially the villainous assassin duo Croup and Vandemar are wonderful and well-realised. Writing a novelization of the story freed Neil from the BBC's time and budget constraints and also allows a greater degree of reader visualisation, making this the superior version.

I read this in 23 hours and barely looked up from it. I've tried to read american gods before but it was the ocean at the end of the lane that persuaded me to try this book and I'm now going through his books like turpentine through an ill sheep

About the author

Neil Gaiman is the No.1 Sunday Times and New York Times bestselling writer of books, graphic novels, short stories, film and television for all ages, and is known for creating extraordinary worlds beyond imagination. He has been awarded numerous literary honours and many of his books have been made into films and adapted for TV and radio. In recent years, Neil wrote and was the showrunner for a critically acclaimed television adaptation of Good Omens, the seminal novel he co-authored with the late Sir Terry Pratchett.
