Virgil Flowers of the Minnesota Bureau of Criminal Apprehension gets called in to a small town in Minnestota where four murders have happened.
Robert Tripp, an employee at a grain company killed Jacob Flood, a farmer. When police see through Tripp's story, he's arrested and is murdered in his cell. The sheriff suspects one of her men, Jim Crocker. When Virgil goes to Crocker's home to question him, Crocker has been murdered.
Then there is Kelly Baker, a teenager whose body was found in a grave yard. She had had extreme sexual activity with more than one partner.
Virgil speaks to Flood's wife, Alma who tells him that Flood and Jim Crocker were childhood friends and that may be the reason Crocker killed Tripp. She also tells him that Kelly had been a member of their church.
Since three of the victims were members of the church, Virgil begins to look at the entire congregation. He finds a mulitgenerational plan where parents subjected their children to sexual activity and shared partners. There was child rape, insest and pedophilia.
This is an extremely well plotted and suspenseful novel that the reader will enjoy. Virgil is a wise cracking character who is also dedicated to finding the wrongs that happen and correcting them. He also doesn't mind having a bit of extra curricular activity as he finds with the attractive sheriff, Lee Coakley.
