Ratings and reviews

The canvas upon which Banks has written this story is as huge as the gas giant on which much of the action is set. The central thread of the story contains a search through the most anarchic civilisation ever portrayed. Played partly for laughs at the anarchic nature of said civilisation, partly for thought provoking comparisons with our addiction to hierarchies, the book weaves its way through drama and human cruelty. Occasionally it becomes bogged down in genuflections, but on the whole the pace is brisk and the story excellent.

Potentially more difficult to read than some others of his, but well worth it. Some excellent ideas, and even better storytelling.

Superbly written, brilliantly characterised and keenly observed. The authors mind contains a multitude of Universes. This one is awesome.

About the author

Iain Banks (1954-2013) came to widespread and controversial public notice with the publication of his first novel, The Wasp Factory, in 1984. Consider Phlebas, his first science fiction novel, was published under the name Iain M. Banks in 1987 and began his celebrated ten-book Culture series. He is acclaimed as one of the most powerful, innovative and exciting writers of his generation.
