About this ebook

In a universe of harsh interstellar conflict, the practice of interspecies diplomacy—when possible—is important. So being a Colonial Union officer attached to an interplanetary diplomatic mission sometimes means taking a fall. Literally.

John Scalzi's Old Man's War was one of the most popular SF debut novels of the last decade; its sequels are The Ghost Brigades, The Last Colony, and Zoe's Tale. Other novels include The Android's Dream and Agent to the Stars. His collection of material from his weblog The Whatever, Your Hate Mail Will Be Graded, won the Hugo Award in 2009. He won the John W. Campbell Award for Best New Writer in 2006, and was elected President of the Science Fiction Writers of America in 2010.

I had read the first five parts of the serial novel, The Human Division, and only just found out that some of the characters first appeared on this story. Since I have been enjoying the episodes so far, I figured that I would give it a chance. Wonderful! Scalzi continues to excel in writing smart, witty science fiction with dialog so sharp you could use it to dice vegetables. If you have begun The Human Division (or other Old Man's War books) but have not read this, pick it up!

"After the Coup" begins a series of short stories set in the universe of Scalzi's "Old Man's War." The unorthodox solutions of a continuing diplomatic mission to alien species in a universe teaming with hostile forces form the tales' levitous center of warm buttery goodness. The writing is solid; @ no time does goodness land on the audience. Scalzi stylishly amazes first by never sucking and then by consistently producing fun, well-written material. Send more Scalzi. I wanted more. Definetly one must be familiar with the background of the Old Man's War to fully understand this short story. It would be nice to see a new novel with Harry, John and Jane in the near future.
