Il libro è composto da due versioni del testo teatrale Grazie: la prima, quella integrale pubblicata nel 2004 dal Pennac-autore, e la seconda, quella del Pennac-attore, alla quale è approdato attraverso l’esperienza sul palcoscenico, sera dopo sera, davanti al pubblico. Fra le due, Mes italiennes, cronaca di questa insolita avventura teatrale:“Che ci faccio qui? Che ci faccio dietro le quinte di questo teatro, dietro questa porta che sta per aprirsi sulla scena? Io! In scena! Ma cosa mi ha preso? Io, che non ho mai voluto fare l’attore! Ho un mattone in mano. Un mattone laccato, verniciato d’oro. Si presume che rappresenti un trofeo. La porta sta per aprirsi, e io sto per scaraventarmi in scena brandendo questo ridicolo trofeo. Perché? Perché io? In che razza di impiccio sei andato a cacciarti? Che cos’hai in testa, santo cielo?”.
