About this ebook

Published exclusively as an ebook, a long short story from thriller master Lee Child about the teenage Reacher, now also available in No Middle Name: the Collected Jack Reacher Stories.

July 1977. Jack Reacher is almost seventeen, and he stops in New York on his way from South Korea to visit his brother at West Point. The summer heat is suffocating, fires are raging in the Bronx, the city is bankrupt, and the mad gunman known as Son of Sam is still on the loose.

Reacher meets a woman with a problem, and agrees to help her . . . and then the power grid fails and the lights go out, plunging the lawless city that never sleeps into chaos.

What does a visiting teenager do in the dark? If that visiting teenager is Jack Reacher, the answer is: plenty.

HIGH HEAT: A Jack Reacher story (0.25) by Lee Child ⭐⭐⭐⭐💫 While these Jack Reacher shorts unashamedly hook your interest in the next full size story (this one is Make Me) by giving you the opening chapter or two at the end, these stories in themselves are very good and enjoyable to read. This time a young 16 year old Reacher is in New York City on his way to visit his brother at West Point. He sees a woman being assaulted by a larger man, so he steps in. Only this man is a mobster; a made man. Set during the New York blackout in 1977 while 'Son of Sam' was murdering couples in their cars, you can see Reacher at 16 already has street smarts and a sense of his own invulnerability even in the face of strong opposition. Overall I thought this story of the younger Jack Reacher, and his strong sense of right and wrong, was a great addition to his portfolio. Had it been a full book it would have earned five stars, but I'll have to settle for four and a half.

was hoping for something to restore my faith in lee child's writing after the disappointment of his last novel. but this certainly wasn't it. felt like it was written by someone trying to copy the style. don't waste your money on this.

From start to finish the action kept moving. Couple of high suspense moments linked with a few surprise twists gives the usual high standard great read. ... Next!
