About the author

Carolyn Zane lived in southern California for the first five years of her life, until her father decided to trade in the city and smog for the life of a gentleman farmer.

Her pa said, "Ma, let's move away from here." She said, "The great northwest is the place we oughta be." So he loaded up the truck and they moved to Oh-ree-gun. State that is. Puddles the size of swimmin' pools. Movie stars. At the local picture show.

After several years of moving around the state, looking for the perfect piece of farmland, Carolyn's father eventually found paradise in the beautiful, scenic Silverton Hills and settled down. There, he enthusiastically began his hobby by purchasing three head of cattle, which would feed the family someday.

Unfortunately, the cattle became more like giant pet dogs, and he never mustered up the heart to butcher them, or the two sheep. Their country menagerie was completed by an assortment of cats and dogs, not to mention the horses and chickens that would wander over to visit from the neighbor's place.

After graduating from Silverton Union High School in 1976, Carolyn attended college at Oregon State University, where she majored in theater arts until she realized that her chances of earning a living in the theater were slim to none. So she changed her major to broadcast/speech communications, and headed for a career in the highly competitive field of television.

While in college, Carolyn met Matt, her future husband, in the unlikely romantic atmosphere of the student cafeteria's dish room. Carolyn admired the way he slaved over the mountains of dirty dishes, earning his way through college. It was love at first sight.

Matt and Carolyn were married in 1978, and graduated from OSU in 1981. From there, they moved to Portland, Oregon, where Matt began his career in the hotel industry, and Carolyn began life as a waitress. After several years of doing odd jobs and hounding the local television companies, she eventually landed a job producing local television commercials.

When she and Matt were first married, they agreed to put off starting a family until they had graduated college, traveled a little, bought and sold several houses, and built their careers. Finally, they ran out of excuses for not having that baby, and on the day of their 16th wedding anniversary, they welcomed Madeline Alexa into their family. Four years later they welcomed Olivia RoseAnne.

As an avid reader of everything from cereal boxes to novels, Carolyn had always harbored a secret desire to write more than 30 seconds' worth of commercial copy. Several years after their first baby was born, wanting to find a career that she could do from the home, she decided to try her hand at writing novels, and the rest, as they say, is history.

In January of 1992, as part of her New Year's resolution, Carolyn began writing her first novel. After completing The Wife Next Door in March of 1993, she was fortunate enough to sell it to Silhouette.

In the years that followed, Carolyn has written and sold nearly 30 books to Silhouette, and has well over a million books in print around the world.

Around the time she began writing, Carolyn and her husband found a wonderful relic of a farmhouse that needed their love and attention. The house is on an acre of land in the beautiful, rolling countryside along Portland's Willamette River.

Like her father before her, she now enjoys the quaint country life. Luckily for her and her husband, however, there is no room on their acre for cattle or sheep, and the closest thing to a horse on the property is their golden retriever, Bob Barker.
