Knut Hamsun was born in Norway in 1859. Hunger was his first novel and was published to great acclaim. He went on to write thirty novels and was awarded the Nobel Prize for Literature in 1920.

About the author

Knut Hamsun was born in Norway in 1859. Hunger was his first novel and was published to great acclaim. He went on to write thirty novels and was awarded the Nobel Prize for Literature in 1920. According to Thomas Mann, 'Never has the Nobel Prize been awarded to one worthier of it.' He died in 1952, and since then a growing number of readers have been drawn to his work by its extraordinary qualities of insight and imagination.
