The setting is the north New Jersey mountains mid-19th century. A mountain man witnesses a young slave girl being abused, decides she doesn't deserve that, and manages to spirit her away. Following is the interaction and interrelationships in his isolated community of indeterminate "jumbled" race and his growing love for the girl. The source of the story is the lore of the place and the people who are still isolated there, even now - who knew?

About the author

Breena Clarke grew up in Washington, DC, and was educated at Webster College and Howard University. She is the author of two widely praised novels, River, Cross My Heart, which was a selection of Oprah's Book Club, and Stand the Storm. She lives in Jersey City, New Jersey.
