Starts off incredibly rough, obviously being the author's first real attempt at writing. Narrative threads are difficult to follow due to the focus jumping all over the place, and there's a curiously jolting combination of old world fantasy setting, yet out of place contemporary slang. However, if you persist (and I had to put the book down and come back to it), it turns into a compelling and unique read with interesting characters who you grow to know and even like, no matter how despicable they are supposed to be. Heartily recommended, especially if you're looking for something different, but expect to have to work at it to get to the good stuff.

Really enjoyed reading this series. Hoping the next two books 'Shadow games' and 'Dreams of steel' will be released in e-book. Also looks like this is going to be adapted into a tv series.

I don't usually read books multiple times. I've read this series once a year. That's probably the highest praise I can give, for any piece of media.
