About this ebook

The seventh installment of Bernard Cornwell’s New York Times bestselling series chronicling the epic saga of the making of England, “like Game of Thrones, but real” (The Observer, London)—the basis for The Last Kingdom, the hit television series.

At the onset of the tenth century, England is in turmoil. Alfred the Great is dead and Edward, his son, reigns as king. Wessex survives, but peace cannot hold: the Danes in the north, led by Viking Cnut Longsword, stand ready to invade and will not rest until the emerald crown is theirs.

Uhtred, once Alfred’s great warrior but now out of favor with the new king, must lead a band of outcasts north to recapture his old family home, that great Northumbrian fortress, Bebbanburg.

In The Pagan Lord, loyalties will be divided and men will fall, as every Saxon kingdom is drawn into the bloodiest battle yet with the Danes: a war that will decide the fate of every king, and the entire British nation.

Excellent book! Read the whole series, which begins with The Last Kingdom, but I read The Empty Throne first, which is the book after The Pagan Lord, and then went to the start and read each book straight through the series. They are all really good books, you can't go wrong with any of them. Bernard Cornwell is a master at writing historical fiction and the main character Uthred is the man we all should strive to be. I just started to read Cornwell's The Winter King which is the first book in a series about King Arthur. I've read 11 of his books straight through, now I'm on the 12th and I've been totally captivated through each. The descriptive battles between the Saxons of the future England and the Danes, Norse, Northmen and others we call Vikings, pull no punches. The "shield wall" is where hero's go to die, and legends are born. Legends like Lord Uhtred of Bebbanburg.

Another amazing book in the series! A period in time revealed to us through Cromwell's great historical fiction writing. I have really enjoyed this series and will be sad when it's over. Thank you Mr. Cromwell. Great job!

These books are some of my very favorite. This one especially. Though it did leave me worried about the future of this series, but given the wonderful execution thus far I wont let my worries detract from the 5 stars this book deserves.
