I first read this when I was 17 after I read the follow-up "Catspaw", and I was thoroughly satisfied. The dramatic introduction of one of my favorite literary character of all times. And, though this was considered a young adults book by my local library, I was very appreciative that Vinge did not dumb down the characters, the storyline or language, and so I was introduced to the beauty of awesome descriptive writing. Now at the age of 33 I'm reminded of why she is still my favorite author till this day. YAY Joan!
