A man and woman claiming to be social workers visit a mother and tell her they need to take her son away. However, when they fail to bring him back, it transpires that the pair are not known by the authorities. Banks is drawn into a full-scale search for the missing boy, but new evidence and inconsistent witness statements cause the detective to question the truth of what he has been told.

The detective now has a murder inquiry on his hands as the body found on the moors is identified as 11-year-old Andre Petri. With Kyle Heath still missing, Banks divides his team to search for a connection between the cases, and when post-mortem examinations show Andre was killed by a heroin overdose, it appears the two boys are linked by the illegal drug trade.
3 Piece of My Heart Part 1

When the body of investigative journalist Matt Barber is found in a holiday chalet in a remote village, Banks and his team are initially confronted by an overwhelming number of leads. As the detective identifies a connection between the victim and a mysterious death in the 1980s connected to the surviving members of a cult rock band, he must begin to unpick decades of lies. To make matters worse, the deceased man's father is former senior police officer Jack Barber, who is now a candidate in the local commissioner elections - and Morton is convinced he is obstructing their inquiry.

With lawyer David Hornby now a suspect, Cabbot is forced to admit the father of her baby doesn't know about her pregnancy. She then discovers band member Martin Soames' confession in the John Gaunt case file is missing and that Matt Barber's father Jack was the original investigating officer, leading Helen to believe she has the evidence she needs to push the former policeman harder. But when Banks learns of a mysterious tape recording that appears to link Jack with the Crystal Kiss, he realises he's in a race to find it if he is to have any hope of uncovering the truth.

When the detective's old neighbour tells him she has found a gun in her teenage daughter's bedroom, his first instinct is to quietly retrieve the weapon. However, Helen persuades him to do things by the book and leads a firearms unit to take possession of it - but an innocent man is critically injured in the process, leading to an internal investigation that threatens to break up Banks's team.

On a desperate search for his abducted daughter, Banks puts pressure on Al to lead him to Jaff, without success. However, Al later offers to help - at a price - and the detective contemplates breaking every rule in the book to meet his demands. Meanwhile, the result of Cabbot's internal investigation has led to Morton's immediate suspension. With her career seemingly in the balance, Tracy in danger and Banks's relationship with Annie close to breaking point, how far will he go to keep his family together?

the characters and stories are believable, show great heart and strength. ITV messed up big time by not renewing a sixth season...

Great show! A shame they didn't make more series. The cast was excellent!
