How Pie VAT Refunds work:

1. After you checkout in store, ask to do a refund via Pie Systems. Open the Pie VAT app and scan the QR code the cashier provides. Take a quick picture of the paper receipt. Submit!

2. Once you are at the airport, use the Pie VAT app to scan your boarding pass.

3. Enjoy your VAT refund - maybe buy some pie.

Ratings and reviews

The app stole a third of my tax refund as a processing fee. If you're using this in Japan, I recommend you find a shop that doesn't use this method for tax refund. Many shops will scan your passport and you'll just be charged the pre-tax price without any hassle. This app makes the process more complicated and requires you to wait for the refund.

Took half of my tax refund in Japan as fees. If you can, I recommend finding another shop that sells the same item that doesn't use Pie Vat. Many shops in Japan will just charge you the tax free price when you show your passport and you're done. The process for Pie Vat is also much more complicated and the app is buggy. Had to upload photos of my passport to the app, queue up again after purchase, just for the staff to scan my passport? Complicated and bloated process

Very time-consuming to set up an account. subsequent purchases should go better, but this system is far less user-friendly than the old system. On this same trip, our other purchases went through global blue, we showed our items, ID, and receipts at the airport, and had the money in our account 2 days later. just saying.
