is one of the best traditional Indian exercises that people can perform. The benefits accruing from these
exercises are unique and excellent. This is a yoga based exercise and it is customary to perform
Surya Namaskar after performing loosening yoga exercises.
The human being can be thought of consisting of ‘pancha kosas’ (or five sheaths) consisting of
the Annamaya (or Body), Pranamaya (or Breath), Manomaya (or Mind), Vijnanamaya (or
Intellect) and Anandamaya (or Bliss) sheaths. These same five kosas can be further grouped
into Gross (or Sthula), the Annamaya or body sheath, Subtle (or Sukshma) consisting of the
pranic, mental and intellectual sheaths and the Causal (or Karana), the Bliss sheath. Properly
performed Surya Namaskar impacts and influences all five sheaths – the body, the breath, the
mind, the intellect and the bliss – thus providing to the performers of these exercises the
benefits for the Sthula (Gross), Sukshma (subtle) and Kaarana (Causal) bodies. Whereas
conventional exercises of all forms including aerobic, weight lifting, walking, jogging and
running are designed to provide benefits to the physical body and its various component organs
including joints and muscles, Surya Namaskar provides benefits of a holistic nature by working
on the physical body, praana (breathing), mind, intellect and the bliss components (or kosas) of
the entire human personality. In that sense, Surya Namaskar can be considered to be a
personality development tool and must be included as part of one’s wellness program
The Surya Namaskar is performed usually early in the morning facing the morning rising Sun.
The Namskar is done in 12 steps, each step having its own posture (including position and form)
with its own breathing pattern (inhalation or exhalation), and its own mantra.Althoght a traditional way of performing namaskar it is scientifically proved that surya namaskar will have a awesome impact on the way of modern lifestyle and is considered to be an important tool in present scenario of being.
Sumati Satakam has been extremely popular for a long time with parents and teachers who try to teach the right conduct and social values to young children. The language used is very simple. The poems have the musical quality of classical meters. Most of the words are simple Telugu. The use of Sanskrit words is very limited. There are hardly any words unfamiliar to modern readers. The poems do not look anything like the sophisticated compositions using the highly cultivated language of prabandhams. Since the Telugu used by the author is so close to what the common people used, the poems look surprisingly familiar to the users of the Telugu. The poems have an astonishing communication power. All the poems are in kanda padyam meter (Chandas). Being in short meter and being unconnected to each other the poems are easy to remember. Even if one does not remember the entire poem, it is commonplace to quote some gem like statements from the Satakam. Each generation of school children learns some of them during elementary and high schools.
Vemana came into contact with Lambika siva yogi in Kondaveedu, who initiated him into the path of Yoga. After this, Vemana travelled across the state, composing poetry and attaining success in yoga.
Vemana composed numerous poems in the vernacular of Telugu. His poems are four lines in length. The fourth line is, in majority of the cases, the chorus Viswadabhirama Vinura Vema - he thus conveyed his message with three small lines written in a simple vernacular. He traveled widely across south India, acquiring popularity as a poet and Yogi. People really took to Vemana's poems owing to their simple language and sweet message. So high was the regard for Vemana that a popular Telugu saying goes 'Vemana's word is the word of the Vedas'. He is celebrated for his style of Chaatu padyam, a poem with a hidden meaning.
C.P. Brown translated most of Vemana's poems into English, during the British occupation of India. A large selection of his poems are a part of the present High School curriculum of Telugu in Andhra Pradesh. In his honor, The Andhra Pradesh government named a University in Kadapa the Yogi Vemana University in 2006. Vemana was believed to have lived for some time in the Gandikota area of Kadapa.
He was known as Pedda Dhurjati (Elder in Telugu) Dhurjati as there were four other people from the same family line who went by the name of Dhurjati during the same period and after him. His grandson Venkataraya Dhurjati wrote Indumati Parinayam(marriage of Indumati), a story from Kalidasa's Raghuvamsam.
He is also credited with many chatuvus, stand alone extempore poems.
sri ram jaya ram jaya jaya ram
Once Sankaracharya was going to few houses to take bhiksha. He came across a hut and asked for bhiksha. ( food ). The women inside the house was embarrassed as a saint has come to her house for food but she is so poor that nothing was available in her house. She searched all the places n finally found a old Amla fruit (Emblic myrobalan) ( nelli kani in tamil ). The poor women was feeling shy to give only this little amla fruit to Sankaya but she has immense devotion and dont want to send the saint who came to her house empty handed. She offered the amla fruit in the bowl of Lord Sankaracharya.
Birth of Kanakadhara stotram :
Sankaracharya realized the womens devotion irrespective of being poor. He immediately started singing twenty one slokas praising Goddess Mahalakshmi , praying her to bless the poor women by driving her poverty and grant her riches.
As you sow, So you reap :
Mahalakshmi replied that the lady has not done any good deeds ( helping others in charity ) in her previous birth. so she doesn't deserve riches and is destined to suffer in poverty. Adi sankaraya accepted it but said though the poor lady din't do any good deeds in previous birth, in this birth, she has such a kind heart that irrespective of being poor, she gave this little amla fruit to him and this good deed alone is enough to bless her with all prosperity.
Goddess Mahalakshmi's grace :
Listening to Sankaracharya's beautiful stotra and his arguement that the poor women must be blessed for her good deed in this birth ( offering of little amla fruit ), Mahalakshmi was moved. Friends, here comes the greatness of this Goddess. She really is for devotion and purity of heart. If we always involve in good deeds , always chanting Gods name, we will surely be blessed by Mahalakshmi.
As Sanakaracharya was singing Kanagadhara stotram, Mahalakshmi showered Golden amla fruit like rain infront of the poor womens hut. Imagine, rain of golden fruit showering from sky . How beautiful is this story friends . How beautiful is the devotion of the poor lady and how great is the saint Adi Sankaraya who sang in praise of Mahalakshmi and beyond all this How graceful is this Goddess Mahalakshmi.
Adi Sankaya has sung this "Kanakadhara stotra" for welfare of everyone who is suffering their past karma and suffering in poverty.
