About this app

Chomp helps you find food that's compatible with vegan, vegetarian, and gluten-free diets. Search for a food, or scan a barcode, to instantly check if it's vegan, vegetarian, or gluten free.

Our “diet grade” algorithm checks each food against our comprehensive database of ingredients that we have identified as not being compatible with vegan, vegetarian, and gluten-free diets.

Chomp shows you what ingredients our algorithm flagged and why.

Compatibility with each diet is color-coded:

Green: Indicates that we are confident that the food, or ingredient, is compatible with a diet.

Yellow: Used when we are uncertain if a food, or ingredient, is compatible with a diet. Yellow is also used if we’re missing the data we need to make a decision.

Red: Represents that we are confident that the food, or ingredient, is not compatible with a diet. These are foods you may want to avoid.

We truly believe that Chomp has the power to inform vegans, vegetarians, and people with gluten sensitivities. However, it should be stated that our algorithm is constantly being improved and we recommend that you double check the ingredient label.

I just found out about this app & immediately downloaded. It's user friendly format is designed for complete user customization & not the usual, limited "cookie-cutter" app. I'm vegan & am thrilled to have this app at my fingertips when shopping & checking EVERY ingredient on every label. All I have to do is scan the barcode & I receive my preferenced dietary report and/or alert of non-vegan ingredients. This useful tool is ESPECIALLY handy for those w/ food sensitivies and allergens.

Thank you so much for your review! We were inspired to create Chomp after using some of those “cookie-cutter” apps you mentioned. Veganism is different for everyone and we do our best to make sure everyone can avoid the ingredients they don’t want.

Essentially useless. In order for this app to serve a relevant purpose, it needs to do something that I cannot do on my own. It's advertised as being capable of determining whether or not something is vegetarian or vegan, but I'm capable of doing that myself 99% of the time. It's the 1% of the time I need it, but unfortunately, it's about as clueless as I am in these situations. "May be vegetarian," or "May not be vegetarian" is not good enough. I need a yes or a no. Otherwise, simply useless.

Great idea, although I think YOU need to read the ingredients a little closer. You say Beyond Chicken isn't vegan because it has chicken in it...but if you read the ingredients, you can clearly see that it's vegan. Yeah, you have over 850,000 foods, but how many of your claims about those foods are accurate?

What's new

We opened up Chomp to everyone by allowing you to customize the ingredients we check. Add ingredients you want to avoid and we'll let you know when a food contains it.

This is especially helpful if you're not vegan, vegetarian, or avoid gluten. Now you can use Chomp to avoid ingredients that you have sensitivities toward or to just avoid an ingredient or two.
