Review from Eric Strianese
Can't mass delete anymore. Also, after deleting episodes (one by one), they seem to automatically re-download if they're not marked as played first. So deleting episodes after listening to them now requires they be marked as played first, and then individually deleted. A formerly quick and simple process now takes many more steps. What a bad update. Might be time to start looking for alternatives.
Update: This is even better after the Oreo update. The new notification banner is a nice touch. Looks great and performs well. I have been using this app for a couple of years now and I have to say that it's great! It's easy to find podcasts and your can customize how many episodes to download and keep. The only issue I have is the latest update broke the widget which I use daily. Hopefully they will fix this soon!
Edit: After a lot of research I discovered a fix for my previous issue by changing the bluetooth version my phone is using. I am very happy about this because I love Pocket Casts and no other podcast app works nearly as well for me. I am going back up to 5 stars for this app. (Original review) My Phone recently updated to Oreo and Pocketcasts no longer sends track info to my car which is where I listen to all of my podcasts. I tested another podcast player and it does this properly as does my music player. I've been using Pocketcasts for years and love it but if this isn't fixed soon I will be switching. Taking a star off for this issue.
Great app, just one problem that is pretty big (to me, at least). Unless you completely disable all notifications for the app, it shows what you're listening to on the lock screen. This mean I also don't get notifications for when new episodes are released nor can I easily pull down the notification bar to pause a podcast. Other than this, the app is great. It's simple to use, you can easily search for new podcasts and it reliably syncs across all devices
Dangerous app for listening while driving. 50% of the time it will not automatically go to next download when a download finishes. I've written many times to them complaining of this bug. They have written back every time that it's expected behavior, a user should manually select next item. They just don't see it's both illegal and dangerous to interact with a phone app while driving.
The fact that we pay for something this buggy is everything wrong with the Android ecosystem. The web and mobile versions of the application run out of sync. On the web it can't access a growing number of subscriptions that it previously could and that it still can on mobile. However, on mobile it's now unable to pause and resume podcasts. On resuming, it kicks up an error saying it can't play the episode. If you revert to downloading it, it kicks up an error saying the file format is incompatible. This, by the way, for a file that was already being played. It's a terrible waste of time. I'm simply migrating my listening to source sites.
How do I add podcasts that your search doesn't find? Primarily I'm looking for the Nerdist which you even have in a screenshot but I cannot get it... But I've also come across a couple others that I've searched for that do not come up. Otherwise so far I love this app over any other I've tried before.
- Fixed some layout issues to do with rotation (which btw where all your fault, you're rotating it wrong people!)
- Fixed stats page loading issue (yes we have stats, go check them out in Settings!)
- Fixed an issue where episodes wouldn't be removed from playlists after being played
- Fixed some issues with table rows and playback and download progress
- Used two exclamation points in update notes just so you know we're serious!!
- Dammit that's 4 now. See what you made us do?
