The Elephants of Trianon is an augmented reality app that brings large-scale public murals to life through animation and spatial sound.
When you point your phone at one of the Elephants of Trianon murals or exhibition prints, the app recognizes the image and places animated three-dimensional forms and immersive sound in the space around it. As you walk between murals, the different scenes connect and blend, creating a changing sound environment shaped by your movement, distance, and orientation. There is no fixed beginning or end — you explore the work by moving through the space.
Rather than functioning like a traditional video or audio playback app, The Elephants of Trianon creates a spatial environment that you move through physically. Sounds are placed in virtual locations around the murals, and as you walk, turn, or approach different artworks, the balance and character of what you hear changes. Movement becomes part of the artwork, and each visitor experiences a slightly different version of the piece.
The soundscape includes field recordings from Bali, New Orleans, and Chicago, along with instrumental music and voices in ten languages. Animated figures — birds, bats, dogs, elephants, rabbits, and celestial forms — appear among the murals, and some virtual elements move through the space between murals, creating a shared environment across the installation.
The Elephants of Trianon is part of a larger series of augmented reality installations by artist Teresa Parod and composer Bill Parod that connect physical artworks with spatial sound and animation. This app is specifically designed for the Elephants of Trianon mural installation and related exhibitions.
How to use the app:
• Download and open the app
• Point your camera at an Elephants of Trianon mural or exhibition print
• Move around to explore sound and animation
• Walk to other murals to build a larger sound environment
• Headphones are recommended for the full spatial audio experience
• Move slowly and explore the space
Important:
This app works only with Elephants of Trianon murals and authorized exhibition prints and does not function without the artwork.
