Turtles live a long time, but for instance, it takes snapping turtles that lay the most eggs, at least sixty years to have one successful egg hatch and then for the hatching to reach adulthood. Turtles are the most imperiled species globally. In North America, freshwater turtles are becoming at risk of extinction because of road traffic, habitat loss, and also poaching. Turtle Guardians is a program to help kids and people help turtles. Becoming a Turtle Guardian is fun and free. The Turtle Guardians app is a tool for all ages. Using the app helps our team of ecologists and biologists understand where to provide mitigation measures to help turtles, and also helps us assess the richness and diversity of turtle populations. Turtle Guardians is being delivered in Ontario, Canada, with hopes to expand across North America and eventually around the world.
Turtle Guardians is a program of cooperating non-government organizations of The Land Between charity, Scales Nature Park, Georgian Bay Turtle Hospital, Ontario Nature, Trillium Lakelands District School Board, and other community partners. Turtle Guardians has been generously funded in 2018 to 2021 by the Ontario Trillium Foundation.
