In the basic game there are two players and you use a standard 52 card pack. Cards rank as usual from high to low: A K Q J T 9 8 7 6 5 4 3 2. Suits are ignored in this game.
Deal out all the cards, so that each player has 26. Players do not look at their cards, but keep them in a packet face down. The object of the game is to win all the cards.
Both players now turn their top card face up and put them on the table. Whoever turned the higher card takes both cards and adds them (face down) to the bottom of their packet. Then both players turn up their next card and so on.
If the turned up cards are equal there is a war. The tied cards stay on the table and both players play the next three cards on the table. Whoever has the higher of the third cards wins the war and adds all eight cards face-down to the bottom of their packet. If the third cards are equal as well, the war continues: each player puts another three cards on the table. The war goes on like this as long as the face-up cards continue to be equal. As soon as they are different the player of the higher card wins all the cards in the war.
The game continues until one player has all the cards and wins. This can take a long time.
The game is normally played with six standard 52 card decks. The cards are ranked in the same way that cards in poker games are ranked, in which the aces are the high card.
One card each is dealt to a dealer and to a player. If the player's card is higher, he or she wins back two times his or her own wager, plus the raise amount. However, if the dealer's card is higher, the player loses their bet.
A tie occurs when the dealer and the player each have cards of the same rank. In a tie situation, the player has two options:
The player can surrender, in which case the player loses half the bet.
The player can go to war, in which case both the player and the dealer must place an additional wager the same size as the first wager.
If the player continues to play in view of a tie, the dealer burns (discards) three cards before dealing each of them an additional card. If the player's card is ranked higher than or the same as the dealer's, then the player wins all three bets (original wager, tie bet, and a matching wager from the dealer). If the dealer's card is ranked higher than the player's, the player loses both the original bet and the tie bet.
If the player and the dealer are tied on the second set of cards, then the player wins both bets. Casino War also features a bonus bet on ties. If the player bets on the tie, and his card matches the dealer's, then the player wins 10 to 1 to his original wager on the tie bet.
Enjoy and good luck!
