About this app

Experience a journey through 3,000 years of Basel's history.

The Münsterhügel is the historic “heart” of the city of Basel. An important archive of the city's history lies dormant in the ground. Here, important turning points in European history can be illustrated, such as the Romanization of Celtic society, the transition from late antiquity to the early Middle Ages, and the development of medieval bishoprics with their diversity of sacred buildings. Join us on a walk across the Münsterhügel and discover archaeological traces from the Bronze Age to the Middle Ages.

The Archaeological Ground Research app audio guide takes you to original sites of Celtic, Roman, and medieval history in Basel, where archaeological information points have been set up. This allows you to experience the diversity of the millennia-old history of the Münsterhügel. Using the visible archaeological monuments and the app, you can find out more about the background and findings of important excavations on site. Digital reconstructions and numerous images illustrate the topics of the individual stations of the archaeological tour in a vivid way.

The app offers 20 minutes of audio material. The tour takes 60 to 90 minutes. It can be started at any information point and can be customized according to your interests and time. To do this, activate GPS and Wi-Fi on your smartphone so that the app can recognize your location. Once the app is installed on your smartphone, all data is stored locally and can be accessed even without an internet connection.
