Industry Leading Security Features
Messages are stored on Proton Mail servers using end-to-end encryption at all times and are transmitted securely between Proton servers and user devices. This largely eliminates the risk of message interception.

Zero Access to Your Email Content
Proton Mail's zero access architecture means that your data is encrypted in a way that makes it inaccessible to us. Data is encrypted on the client side using an encryption key that Proton does not have access to. This means we don't have the technical ability to decrypt your messages.

Open-Source Cryptography
Proton Mail's open-source software has been thoroughly vetted by security experts from around the world to ensure the highest levels of protection. Proton Mail only uses secure implementations of AES, RSA, along with OpenPGP, while all of the cryptographic libraries used are open source. By using open-source libraries, Proton Mail can guarantee that the encryption algorithms used do not have clandestinely built-in back doors.

Proton Mail in the press:

“Proton Mail is an email system which uses end-to-end encryption, making it impossible for outside parties to monitor.” Forbes

“A new email service being developed by a group from MIT that met at CERN promises to bring secure, encrypted email to the masses and keep sensitive information away from prying eyes.” Huffington Post

Minimal, you can read and send and that's about it. No bulk operations, such as marking everything read; you have to use a desktop computer for that. Little control over notifications, I marked a few hundred messages read on the desktop and the app went crazy with a separate notification for each that I could not disable. For what it does it seems to work fine, it just doesn't do much; so can't really recommend as a "main driver" email app.

Sorry to hear that. At the moment such bulk operations are not supported within the app. However, we'll add your vote to the existing feature request about supporting this functionality, to help our team prioritize future implementations. If there's anything else we can do to improve, you can let us know at: https://proton.me/support/contact.

Recent UI update makes the app unusable. App crashes whenever I check a category other than Inbox. It's difficult to read the text, tell if a message has been opened or not, see the menu buttons, see the buttons for things to do with messages, select messages, see where one message in the inbox ends and another begins, use gestures accurately, or see categories. There's no way to use the old UI. Also, purely aesthetic opinion, it's just ugly and looks like a cheap knock off of gmail now.

Sorry to hear that. We've passed your feedback along to the team, so it can be taken into consideration. Please provide us with more information regarding your crash report through the in-app 'Report a problem' feature, so we can help you with troubleshooting. In the meantime, try clearing the app cache or uninstalling and re-installing the app.

Until recently, the app was working wonderfully. But the two latest updates have been atrocious. The app refuses to send messages regularly, now, doesn't tell me it didn't send until sometimes hours later, and then gets stuck in a spinning loop of "in progress" that I can't break. I can't edit my pending message while being sent, but I can't cancel the send either. I have had this issue both when in network and over WiFi. IDK what devs did, but it needs to be fixed ASAP. This is untenable.

Hi! We're sorry to hear about the trouble. Can you try disabling the 'Alternative routing' feature from the app settings, and clearing the app data from your device settings (which will log you out) to see if this helps? If the issue persists, please report it through the in-app 'Report a problem' feature, so we can look further into this.

What's new

* Improved the stability of the app, particularly around the sending flow.
* Improved the display of malformed newsletters.
* Fixed several crashes.
