A retro game knitted into an open world with strong roguelike elements.

LinesTrail is a roguelike adventure filled with monuments to uncover, treasures to discover. The open world of this game gives players the freedom to roam around in their own pace and direction. There are no limits waiting for you, the infinite world this title randomly generates is always there, ready for you to explore. With simple retro game mechanics that have a massive impact, this is truly easy to learn but hard to master.

In LinesTrail, you play as a blue cube that wanders around and lays a trail behind it. The blue cube can’t go on the trail it left behind. The main mechanic might seem simple, but wait until you start discovering things on the infinite open world, from massive barriers that you have to escape to monuments scattered over the randomly generated open world.

This open world based game is heavily inspired by retro games such as Snake and Tron. Inspiration also came from my passion for roguelikes. We believe there is a lot of potential buried under roguelike titles, after playing the famous roguelike: Spelunky. Roguelike adventures allow for rich replayability, which we tried to emphasize during the creation of LinesTrail.

LinesTrail’s open world generation algorithm makes sure there is always something around the corner that our beloved players will discover. We believe that open world models deliver more freedom to the player putting players high up in control of almost everything they do. Combine all that with the roguelike style permadeath and we got a game that forces players to study the deepest parts of the mechanics.

LinesTrail started out as a small project. I wanted to learn JavaScript and decided the best way to do so would be to make a small game. I looked for simple retro games to start with. And after some time, I decided to try and recreate the famous retro game: Snake. But in the making, I tested the game before I figured out how to get rid of the body trailing it. This test inspired me to develop a simple game and call it LinesTrail. Which we remade in Unity with 3D graphics and an infinite world, but still keeping the retro game inspiration. Retro games have some sort of charm to it that we tried to maintain as much as possible.

You wake up in a grid, that stretches out into the horizon on all directions. There doesn’t seem to be an end to the grid.
The infinite open world feels lonely and empty, but is it empty and lonely?

Note: This game will get regular updates, but because we consist of only 1 developer, it will take a few months to get each update rolling. If you want to help, contact us.
