About this game

"Rule of Division" is a fun way for middle school students to learn division. One learns by dividing numbers evenly by slashing monsters with swords. Our goal is to find a fun way for students to get better at math!

We teach division at an intermediate level. Students will learn which numbers are evenly divisible by each other. They will begin by learning the relationship between multiplication and division. The difficulty increases gradually.

Our game can help make math a little more fun. It could work as a math lesson to, for example, get through 10 rounds in the game.

We address middle school students who are our target group. These students learn the times tables and thus also need to know division because the two methods of calculation are related. In middle school, mainly in 4th grade, students learn times tables and then it would be appropriate to follow it up with a strong focus on division to consolidate the information. Division as a method of calculation can be made much easier with a few tricks, for example checking the one number to quickly see if you can shorten the whole number by, say, 2. There are simple tricks to determine which numbers are divisible by which others. These tricks are good to teach and we can do that with a game. We made a survey that students in year 4 and year 6 answered. From our results, we could determine that almost everyone in both grade levels finds math difficult or at least a little difficult. We therefore hope to be able to help!
