Remote or virtual tower is a new concept in air navigation, where the traffic control of an airport is performed somewhere else than in the airport. The Hungarian air navigation service provider is one of the pioneers in this field of innovation. At the end of 2016 HungaroControl successfully completed live trails of its’ integrated Remote Tower (rTWR) at Budapest Airport, managing close to 600 movements without any restrictions.
The 360 degree videos of HungaroControl’s Remote Tower control room give you a little insight of future ATM infrastructure. The concept is built on the integration of the ground surveillance system and an appropriately positioned camera network to support air traffic control officers with customizable live picture with additional information enhancing the 'out-of-the-window' view from a real tower.
Location independent independent ATS service with high redundancy should be a perfect platform for providing aerodrome services at a cost effective way and might be a source of further business. With HungaroControl’s rTWR concept for medium sized airports, more valuable and customised visual information can be gained from available data to enhance ATCOs’ situational awareness and the level of safety. The remote tower technology is a cost effective business development platform for regional and seasonal airports as well.
