The widespread rule of thumb for the age of dogs, according to which one year equates to about seven human years, is quite wrong by US researchers. According to genetic analyzes, the four-legged friends do not age at a constantly faster pace than their masters, writes Trey Ideker from the University of California San Diego and his team in the trade journal "Cell Systems". Instead, young dogs age particularly quickly compared to humans, but later the aging process slows down.
Instead of the simple 7-year rule of thumb, based on their studies on more than 100 Labrador Retrievers, the researchers propose a somewhat more complicated formula: "Age = 16 times the natural logarithm of the dog's age + 31" (in simple terms: the natural logarithm of a number is the Power with which the base value e = 2.718 must be raised to the power to get the number). A dog at the age of 1 year corresponds to an adult human at the age of 31. At the age of 2 a dog is already 42 human years old, a 4 year old dog is comparable to a 53 year old person, at 5 years it is around 57 years. At 9, a dog would have reached the comparable human age of 66 years. The difference to the "seven-year formula": The older a dog gets, the fewer human years correspond to a dog year. According to the new findings, the biological age of a 20-year-old dog is more comparable to a 79-year-old person - and not to a 140-year-old-Methuselah.
