Palimpsest means the finest fiction from the Indian subcontinent. Publishers of contemporary novels, memoirs, political narratives, journalistic research and short fiction, Palimpsest has lined up strikingly original new writers and big names from the writing world as well.
Palimpsest entered the Indian publishing scene in 2012 promising to do things differently. It took note of the tectonic shifts in culture, inside man’s life and writing brought about by relentless waves of new technology. The new reading milieu of the young urbanite, we knew, has more expectations from us. Within the publishing world the silos were being razed, setting the field for an exciting game. We responded knowing things would never be the same again. Contemporary, with the wind, and still – books for us meant memories of runes of “an ancient palimpsest on which layer upon layer of thought and reverie had been inscribed, and yet no succeeding layers had completely hidden what had been written previously.” So we were – pulled by the future and the past our guiding beacon.
Freedom’s Mother, the first Palimpsest title, served as our signature. The iconic novel about the 1971 Bangladesh Liberation War is a marker of our identity. Palimpsest is a global publishing brand now, preferred by writers from Pakistan, Bangladesh, England, Canada, Israel, the US and Australia. And still – we, as in the early days of our outing, sense a challenge while handling a new writer. For us the writer is a borderless peripatetic imagining his world. We are for he is.
