Community Radio Sarang is managed by the Mangalore Jesuit Educational Society (MJES) and is run by St Aloysius College (Autonomous), Mangalore, India. It was established in September 2009. SARANG 107.8 FM is more of a community-participating radio. Approximately 95% of the content is produced by and with the local community or by health and legal workers for communities.
Sarang means harmony of colours signifying various social, religious, linguistic communities and their peaceful coexistence in coastal Karnataka. Mangalore community is a melting pot of cultures, religions and languages which is signified by the name Sarang.
Radio Sarang has broadcasts live and recorded programmes for 16 hours a day. The station has won two national awards for its two unique programmes. The station has programmes in Kannda, Tulu, Konkani and Byari languages and occasionally in English and Hindi as well.
Some of the unique and flagship programmes of the station are: Vrutti Samtrupti, (ವೃತ್ತಿ ಸಂತೃಪ್ತಿ), Jana Dani (ಜನ ದನಿ), Byaari - Maikalto Palaka (ಮೈಕಾಲ್ತೊ ಪಲಕ), Konkani – Taallo Umallo (ತಾಳೊ ಉಮಾಳೊ), Aadu Aata Aadu (ಆಡು ಆಟ ಆಡು), Tulu bale paterga (ಬಲೇ ಪಾತೆರ್ ಗಾ) among others.
The station plays local folk art yakshagana (ಯಕ್ಷಗಾನ) on all 365 days of the year. There are 3 to 4 live programmes every day where a number of listeners call the station and interact, giving their opinions and perspective on a given subject.
