The Muscular Dystrophy Association, Parent Project Muscular Dystrophy, TREAT-NMD and the United Parent Project Muscular Dystrophy have therefore worked together to produce a comprehensive “Guide for Families” based closely on the full academic article. The guide is available printed as well as online (http://en.care-nmd.eu/international/family-guide) and was developed as applikation for smartphones at the Center for Medical Biometry and Medical Informatics of the Medical Center – University of Freiburg (Germany).
The guide can be used on its own or as a supplement to the academic document, and we hope that individuals with Duchenne and their families can use it in collaboration with their care providers to discuss their own specific care needs. This guide is available in English and German, translations into other languages are planned. This page will be continuously updated as new versions are produced.
The Obstructive Sleep Apnea Screener (OSAS) provides four OSA screening tools including:
·The American Society of Anesthesiologists’ Checklist
·The Berlin questionnaire
·The STOP Questionnaire: Snoring, Tired, Observed breathing disruption, high blood Pressure
·The STOP-BANG questionnaire: comprised of the STOP Questionnaire with further questions for BMI, Age, Neck circumference and Gender.
The OSAS software obviates the need for memorization of these tests and referral to textbooks or journals to administer the screens correctly. Users have access to these screens at their fingertips. Using these screens, physicians can determine the general likelihood (low or high) of a patient suffering from OSA. This application will be particularly useful for physicians obtaining patient history prior to surgery, so that they may be better prepared to deal with complications if they arise.
Once data is input, the likelihood of OSA is recalculated for each category and questionnaire and the results are displayed at the bottom of the screen. Statements for categories within each test and for the overall result of the test are shown with highlighting according to the result:
·Category results will have either no background to indicate a normal, non-positive result, or they will have a yellow background to indicate that the patient is positive for that category.
·Overall results are color coded blue to indicate a low probability of OSA, or red to indicate that OSA is likely to be present in the patient according to the particular questionnaire.
WARNINGS: This software does not provide a diagnosis nor medical advice, but only a general likelihood (low or high)of Obstructive Sleep Apnea. The software is intended to be a convenience tool providing screening tests in an accessible and portable format, it is not intended to replace a physician's clinical judgement.
This software implements publically available screening tests from peer reviewed medical and scientific literature. The results echo the tests presented in the literature. Diastolic Robotics Inc. (DRI) can guarantee neither the accuracy of the tests nor the applicability of the tests to an individual patient. It is assumed that the user of the software is a physician who will use their clinical judgement, and knowledge of these screens to interpret the software's output.

Scientific research has taught us that snorers snore on average louder and more frequently in the supine compared to the lateral position. This is old news for the partner of a snorer. Then why is it not possible to prevent snorers from sleeping on their backs? Indeed, preventing sleeping in the supine position can be effective for many positional snorers. The classic approach is the so-called tennis ball method: the snorer has to wear a shirt with a tennis ball attached to the back during the night. If the person turns on his or her back during the subconscious state of sleep, the tennis ball will give an uncomfortable feeling and the person will ideally turn from the supine back to a lateral position. Unfortunately, tennis balls are generally poorly tolerated, often lead to sleep disturbances, and there are snorers who will still sleep in a supine position despite the ball on their back.
Snore Trainer is an app that runs on your Android device. The device is typically worn on the chest during sleep. Snore Trainer has been created for positional snoring, and not for patients with obstructive sleep apnea.
How it works
Snore Trainer will try to help you with your snoring problem. People sleeping on their backs are more prone to snoring and may even snore more loudly. Snore Trainer uses a stimulus when lying supine in order to try to teach you not to sleep on your back.
How to use it
Before going to bed, touch the big button to start the trainer.
Wearing your device
In order to use the app, you could choose to place your device in a horizontal or vertical position on your chest with the screen facing forward. We advise you to position the device stably to avoid displacement. You can make a choice between several techniques to keep your device in place. You can use a self-made strap or chest pocket on a T-shirt. You can also use an elastic bandage. Some users made their own chest band.
Save your device’s battery life
Because you should not sleep with a plugged-in device on your chest, here are some tips to help you preserve the battery life of your device:
• Start the app with a fully charged battery.
• Avoid running energy-guzzling apps in the background of your device.
• Set the screen brightness on your device to low.
• If necessary, use an external battery.
• Turn off your screen, Snore Trainer will continue to run in the background.
Snore Trainer is not intended for the treatment of any medical condition. Snoring can be a symptom of obstructive sleep apnea. If you think you might have obstructive sleep apnea, we advise you to visit your medical doctor for the correct diagnosis and treatment. Snore Trainer is not responsible for any damage or injury while using the application. SnoreTrainer should not be used by patients with a pacemaker, an implantable cardioverter-defibrillator (ICD) and people who are not allowed to wear a device near the chest for any other reason.
Counting upon sensing a "apnea".Baby sound and light and vibration to stimulate after 10 counts.Notify an alarm after 16 counts. Can also make a call automatically after 60 seconds.
Must be initialized after startup because using the accelerometer of the terminal.Terminal noisy it can not be used.
These are common symptoms of sleep apnoea, which if left untreated can contribute to serious cardiovascular illnesses, as well as sexual dysfunction, diabetes and obesity. The Sleeping Disorders Centre provides rapid assessments for sleep apnoea and other sleep disorders, and a full range of treatments and ENT services.
This app provides information about sleep apnoea and the treatment options available at the Sleeping Disorders Centre located at Harley Street in London. Take the STOP-BANG test to find out if you have a high risk of suffering from sleep apnoea and learn more about the condition. Get the latest news and research about sleep apnoea and watch informative videos about the condition and how Continuous Positive Airway Pressure (CPAP) treatment can transform the lives of sufferers.
Sleeping Disorders Centre founder, Consultant ENT surgeon Michael Oko, is an internationally recognised expert on sleep apnoea. He is an advisor to the UK Government on a national strategy to tackle the rising prevalence of sleep apnoea in the UK. He has appeared as an expert on the BBC programme Goodnight Britain, and speaks at conferences around the world to promote understanding and awareness of sleep apnoea. Michael founded the Sleeping Disorders Centre in 2006 and now runs 3 clinics in the UK.
More from developer
Dental Sleep Medicine has emerged as a safe and effective therapy in managing patients with all stages of obstructive sleep apnea.
The American Academy of Sleep Medicine (AASM) recommends oral sleep appliances as first line treatment options for those with mild and moderate sleep apnea as well as for those individuals who are CPAP intolerant.
The dental treatment of Sleep Disordered Breathing (SDB) has emerged as an excellent option for patients suffering from snoring, upper airway resistance syndrome (UARS) and obstructive sleep apnea (OSA).
Untreated sleep apnea leaves one at significant medical risk, can be life threatening, and evidence supports it can shorten life expectancy seven to ten years.
It is the challenge of sleep professionals working together to find the most comfortable, compliant and effective therapy for individuals diagnosed with OSA.
Dental treatment of OSA with Oral Appliance Therapy (OAT) includes the Mandibular Advancement Splint (MAS) and Tongue Retaining Device (TRD).
These devices are FDA-approved, custom-fabricated by a dentist with special training in Dental Sleep Medicine.
Medicare has approved the use of Oral Appliance Therapy in patients with documented mild, moderate and severe OSA. Third party Insurance is following suite also. Primary snoring is excluded from Medicare coverage.
SleepApneaDMD will be updated regularly to provide you with fresh and useful content.
