The term Arab days is applied to the war incidents that took place between the Arab tribes, or between the Arab tribes and their neighboring states. And most of these days were in the Jahiliyyah due to the dominance of tribal sectarianism at that time and the absence of a state that unites the Arab tribes, and a group of them broke out in Islam.

The motives of these days were mostly tribal fanaticism, as each tribe was an independent unit, and competition between tribes over water resources and pastures was one of the most prominent causes of these wars. Perhaps the war broke out as a result of the attack on a neighbor of the tribe or the violation of its protection.

If more deaths occurred from one of the two warring tribes than the number of those killed by the other tribe, the incidents between them were renewed, seeking revenge for those killed. The tribal days of this were continuous throughout the pre-Islamic era.

The motive for these wars may be a dispute over leadership and honour, or the desire of the state or tribe to extend its authority over the neighboring tribes, or similar causes of conflict. And many of these days it erupted for trivial reasons that did not necessitate bloodshed, such as one of the sons of one tribe attacking a man from another tribe, so each of them sought refuge in his tribe, and war broke out between the two tribes. The tribe is obligated to support its sons, whether they are unjust or oppressed, and for this reason, any small conflict soon turns into a large-scale tribal conflict.

Most of the time, the incidents took the form of sudden raids. If the tribe was struck by surprise from another tribe that invaded it, then the cattle were captured, the women were taken captive, the men were captured, or some of them were killed. However, the invading tribe was reluctant to shed blood as much as possible and preferred captivity to killing, because the captive was ransomed by his people, so the invading tribe enjoyed the spoils of cattle, while killing exposed the tribe to seek revenge. Hence, the death toll was small in those days.

However, during the days of the Arabs, much blood was shed, and the incidents took place in successive days, such as the war of Al-Basous and the war of Dahis and Al-Ghabraa, for example.

The aggressor tribe used to lie in wait for the aggressor tribe until it had the opportunity to raid it and demand its revenge. Tribal customs required the tribe whose men were killed to avenge him, no matter how long it took, otherwise it would be disgraced forever. Sometimes the tribe was persuaded to accept the blood money for its dead in order to avoid bloodshed, such as what happened in the war of Dahis and Al-Ghabraa.

The conquest was one of the characteristics that the tribes were proud of in the pre-Islamic era, because it was proof of the tribe's strength, courage, and resistance, but at the same time it was a vital necessity imposed by the living conditions of the Arabs, and their environment, which was starved of bounties.
