An essential app, Certainly for anybody who does anything outdoorsy. I started using this back on Nokia symbian before android even existed, and never looked back. One of the 1st apps I install on every new phone. Simple, and works well with no need for internet connection. Just wish you could get rid of any annoying social media sharing button stuff. I don't do things to say ooh look at me, and anyway you can share "useful" routes etc on the view ranger app/forum if you wanted to. Need to be able to edit activity type too!
Can't be beaten for the price. Straightforward route planning and tracking. Even broadcast your adventures live if you want. I only wish it could make use of the downloadable OS maps you get these days when you buy the physical ones. I gather the OS app isn't a patch on ViewRanger (from reviews), so I've not even bothered trying it. OpenCycleMap is generally sufficient.
After using Google's excellent but now discontinued My Maps ( simpler, more intuitive than ViewRanger) this app seems to be a reasonable replacement. However, it has some way to go as far as ease of use and intuitive flow is taken into consideration. There are a lot of options available. Getting started is clumsy at best while finding things can be a challenge. There are too many steps to achieve a result (thus not intuitive). The user manual is a must for the first timer. Unfortunately the manual is
Simply the best GPS app Easy to use. Great features. Update: Finally purchased the premium USA map which is rather disappointing. The free open cycle map has better resolution. Update: After update, app sometimes stops recording track data while time continues to run. This makes it riskier to use off trail.
Needs a redesign In terms of what this app can do and what can be achieved with it, 5 stars. But it's knowing how to do it which reduces my rating to 2 stars. This app is not in any way user friendly. This is why, for example, the Ramblers provide courses in how to use it. I now regret spending money on Viewranger because over the years they have done little to improve its usability. Even simple consistency within the app regarding function of the back button. Different routes within the app to achieve similar things.
Great! Never thought I would leave behind my trusty paper map and compass but this app is much easier to navigate by, orienteering is a skill any walker should know but this app can't be beaten when taking a casual walk or for planning routes also, being able to get pinpoint coordinates for sat nav parking is awesome. Some might say the mapping is expensive but consider how much of a paper map you actually use...
