Excellent GPS Nav App I am really pleased with View Ranger. This app provides great track planning and tracking functionality and also integrates well with the web based app. I would like it if they would add some marine charting options such as import NOAA charts. There is a bit of a learning curve with this app but I think this is more related to its feature richness than bad user interface. The more flexible the app the more the user has to learn. I think this app justifies the learning curve. Great job View Ranger.
Summits on the Air I've been using this app for many years and think it's the best invention since sliced bread :) Recommended to me by a friend in Mountain Rescue. As a licenced Amateur Radio operator I partcipate in Summits on the Air 'SOTA' and use the app to plan and follow my intended routes to the summits (along side map and GPS ...backup). Installed UK OS maps...expensive but worth it if you use it everyday as I do. Brilliant app. GW4VPX
This app has some way to go as far as ease of use and intuitive flow is taken into consideration. There are a lot of options available. Getting started is clumsy at best while finding things can be a challenge. There are too many steps to achieve a result (thus not intuitive). The user manual is a must for the first timer. Unfortunately the manual is not well organized. The NEW option of being able to link a photo to a track is implemented poorly with the need for either a Flickr or Twitter link which cannot be done without an internet connection: It should be on the device itself where the photo is likely to reside.
POI Notifications Until the last upgrade if a note had been made on a waymarker you received a notification as you arrived, which also showed the note on the app. This very useful feature no longer works. To be clear this is not the notification for every waymarker just those with notes/points of interest on them. Can this useful feature please be reinstated.
Great app. Easy to find walks/bike rides and just as easy to track, create and share routes. If you create a route, share it for free, don't be greedy - the countryside is free and the walks we share should be too! Customer service is excellent, highly recommended!
ViewRanger struggles to find a GPS signal and so it may, or may not, record hikes. If ViewRanger is sure where you are then it will show your location on a map in a red circle. If it isn't sure, then you are shown in a grey circle and the damned things stops recording your hike/activity. I've tried it along side other Rambling Apps and ViewRanger has simply failed to record my walk. It has more bells and whistles than the control centre for a power station, but it just stops recording on this adhoc basis. Unless, you have a phone, or other gizmo, which has an exceptional GPS pick up then you will find, like I have, that using ViewRanger is a frustrating and often pointless business. Also, if you buy maps (map tiles) through ViewRanger, then you can't view, or use them with any other application. Try it by all means, but don't buy their maps until you are sure that it can find your position.
