Review from Bill Strathearn
Paid $20 for premium maps and there is no way to select that map to be displayed
November 16, 2017In the app, go to menu tab, 3 dots top right, My maps and into My maps to the right side. If the USA maps are not listed, pull the list down and let go so it updates. Open a USA map. To save areas to use offline, choose Map Options (2 squares top right), Download a Custom Offline Area. Tap to select a tile, drag to select an area, then download.
Truly great app. I go rambling with a group of friends, we can always find a great route or make one. Never managed to go too far off track when using this to back up map reading. Support it always awesome too when I have a bit of finger trouble.
I find Viewranger utterly frustrating and extremely difficult to use. Have now deleted. Map my walk is far easier.
Great app for walking. I love the seamless integration with other services such as Walking World and the synchronisation between devices. Support is brilliant, a real person responds with useful answers very quickly. Each new version brings real improvements. The best walking app of many I've tried.
Latest improvements are great. Use it for emergency response work and the Android Wear integration makes it worth buying a wear watch in itself just for this app. Now it uses a android wear GPS independently it's superb. It also now uses GEO intents (which weren't mentioned in the update details), hooray. Now you can select View Ranger as your default mapping app. Would still prefer it to accept a 6,8 or 10 digit grid ref without having to pre choose which type you are entering (it should be able to work it out itself) and be able to have a free text box to paste in a coordinate and then VR recognise the type but with GEO intents it makes it easier to use another program to do it before loading VR. Awesome app!
Brilliant app. I was astonished to see tracks not even on ordinance survey maps that existed and lead to destinations directed, and amazing job thanks.
Offline maps don't have a pause button while downloading. If at any time the signal interupts in a 400mb map, the map stops downloading and it has to return to the start. For travellers on the road and people with unreliable internet, this is very inconvenient. Also if you buy map of a whole country, you still have have to pay separately for individual tiles, as you can only download the maps in large chunks. In New Zealand North Island, the central plateau with most major hike is divided into 4 separate downloadable area in 1:50000 scale. If they employed or asked a local, they would know that's a terrible way to do it, as many major hikes are in that area which is cut into 4 large chunks. Clearly an app that has not consulted their users in beta stage for New Zealand or this glaring mistake would be obvious.
