In the last five years, DTLA has experienced an extraordinary commercial, residential and artistic renaissance, transforming from a moribund 9-to-5 business and government center to a thriving community pulsing with life. High-rise hotels and sleek lofts, top restaurants and great city parks have sprung to life, to find their places amid the wholesale markets, office towers, mom-and-pop stalls and historic buildings, some of which date from the early 1800s. This is exciting stuff for a region that was long down, out and neglected.
DTLA, as it is often called these days, is roughly bounded by Chinatown and Dodger Stadium on the north, the University of Southern California and Exposition Park on the south, the 110 freeway on the west, and the Los Angeles River on the east. The neighborhoods that make up its eight square miles are as unique as the sprawling city itself and encompass all the themes that make a city great--business, arts, fashion, entertainment, architecture, sports, history, culture, diversity, and industry.
In this app, we have broken them into 12 distinct regions--the Arts District, Civic Center, Old Bank+Spring Street, the 7th Street area, Broadway+Jewelry, the Bunker Hill area, Little Tokyo, Skid Row+Central City, the Fashion+Flower districts, South Park, Chinatown, and Very Near to DTLA (which includes Exposition Park and Lincoln Heights). A Basics section gives the lowdown on transportation, safety, kid-friendly activities, and more.
★ About the Authors ★
We are two veteran journalists who share an unabashed admiration for the City of Angels and its unique downtown neighborhoods. We created this app because we felt there was a real need for an insider's guide to the new and improved downtown.
We not only profile all the recognizable places like the Music Center and L.A. Live, but also offer details and tips on the lesser-known destinations--how to navigate the Piñata and Fashion districts, where to find the best Wifi tables and coolest art exhibits, what to order at the King Eddy Saloon. Between the two of us, we have enjoyed drinks in basement vaults and on rotating rooftops, meditated in a Japanese temple, built snowmen in Pershing Square, and biked and walked just about every downtown street. We have personally visited every destination listed in this guide.
Makinen is film editor of the Los Angeles Times and a five-year resident of downtown. Randall is the author of three travel books on Southern California and has served as a contributing editor to Fodor’s Gold Guides and Zagat’s Insider’s Guide to Disneyland.

The whale shark network was set up by the Maldives Whale Shark Research Programme in association with the IUCN as part of the Big Fish Network; an online network utilising citizen science to increase knowledge, awareness and stewardship of marine life.
How does it work? In a nutshell Maldivian wildlife tour-operators, contribute information about their daily whale shark excursions to our central database. In exchange, the MWSRP have opened up their 7 year old data archive to everyone, whilst also providing training and materials for guides so they can plan and deliver a safer and more enjoyable experience, both for tourists and for the sharks.
Using a technique called photo-identification, guides are able to identify and 'get to know' individual whale sharks by their unique spot patterns. Because guides can now recognise individual sharks they are able to identify damaging trends and already there has been an increase in communication and awareness with regards to encounter best-practice. This sense of stewardship and community among tour operators is what the whale shark network hopes to continue to foster, and in doing so, help build the industries capacity for self-regulation and sustainability.
This app is your window to this new network! We wanted to give everyone the opportunity to explore the life histories of Maldivian sharks and be updated as to which shark has been seen, where it was spotted and by who! Maybe you're planning a trip and want to see where and when is the best place to encounter whale sharks? Or perhaps you've been lucky enough to swim with a whale shark here already? If so you can use this app to follow the progress with 'your' shark long after your back on dry land!
The Maldives Whale Shark Research Programme (MWSRP) is a charity that carries out whale shark research and fosters community focused conservation initiatives in the Maldives. For more information and to follow our our progress please visit us online and give us a like!

Discover cool animal facts, share your photos via Facebook, Twitter and E-mail and make a difference by supporting the Tennessee Aquarium's freshwater conservation programs.
The Tennessee Aquarium, a 501(c)(3) non-profit institution, inspires wonder, appreciation and protection of water and all life that it sustains. The Aquarium serves as a vital link connecting people to freshwater and the ocean beyond. Within the Aquarium's two buildings, visitors follow the path of a raindrop from the streams of an Appalachian Cove Forest to the depths of the Gulf of Mexico and beyond. Along the way, guests meet more than 10,000 animals in a richly diverse living collection.
The Aquarium also operates the IMAX 3D Theater and the River Gorge Explorer. Guests can plunge into a 3D underwater adventure or take a virtual trip to exotic locations at Chattanooga's premiere movie theater. Located at the Chattanooga Pier, the River Gorge Explorer is the United State's only high-speed vessel operating on an inland waterway. An Aquarium naturalist leads each cruise, pointing out wildlife and historic points of interest while traveling to and from a protected habitat within "Tennessee's Grand Canyon."
We recommend that you also download one of three QR scanning apps (Barcode Scanner, Google Goggles, or QR Droid) to allow you to scan QR codes which will be posted at each enclosure.
