About this app

This comprehensive family app from the Baby Sign Language Network aims to provide parents/caregivers and their babies/toddlers with respectful, interactive communication from the very beginning. Its graphic design also intentionally includes siblings who cannot yet read.

Beyond simply teaching baby sign language, the app offers additional suggestions for everyday life in its informational texts (i). These include play and activity tips, instructions on how to perform the signs, typical everyday situations, and other contextually relevant signs.

You can use the app at home to look up or learn new signs (e.g., to accompany rituals, at mealtimes, for feelings, etc.) and also find thematic ideas on the go, such as which signs are best suited for the park, playground, forest, or water.

The selection of signs in this app reflects our experience since 2004 regarding what babies find engaging and which initial vocabulary is particularly important for them to communicate their needs, express their thoughts, or share their discoveries.

The Goal and Approach of Baby Sign Language
Baby sign language helps parents understand each other and be understood more quickly. Simple gestures emphasize key words and enable early dialogue. Even babies as young as 6-9 months can understand frequently used words/signs and consciously use their hands. Baby sign language gives them the opportunity for active participation and facilitates the learning of spoken language. This intensive exchange strengthens the bond, creates closeness, self-confidence, and contentment, and makes children's eyes light up when they feel understood.

The baby signs are based on German Sign Language (DGS), from whose various regional dialects the hand gestures were selected to be as visual as possible and easy for babies to imitate.

Following a holistic approach, the vocabulary is chosen so that the signs playfully facilitate association with words, are clearly distinguishable from one another in hand and arm movements, and involve various movements and body parts. This ensures that, in addition to visual perception, gross and fine motor skills, hand-eye coordination, and body awareness are also developed.
