To all amigos out there, since Android 8, all permissions are set within the app, in contrast with the way Android 7 was working. The app will not run properly unless you allow it location permission and turn on location when operating the camera. The app works very well with Android 10 AOSP and 9 EMUI. I was also upset in the past, but I missed this very important thing. Try and revert.

wifi is connected to dash cam's hotspot, but the app shows it's not connected and asks to connect to it again. Looks like Xiaomi receiving this kind of reviews since middle of 2019, but no fix still in 2020 april. App is useless, thinking about returning dash cam, since I cant export videos to smartphone and need to bring sd card home and connect it to PC each time.

If you have troubles with this app, try to connect your Mi Dash Cam 1S with the "Mi Home" app. Pretty sure that this is for the Chinese version (v1) of the camera and that the app is looking only for SSID (WiFi hotspot name) called "midr-cardvr-v1_midevXXXX" where the world version of the camera have got SSID called "MiDashCam1s_v2_dcXX" or something like that. Had some troubles with "Mi Home" as well, but with "factory reset" of the camera and making my phone to forget previous WiFi hotspot name and connect with the newly generated "password" - it happens and now I have access to the camera videos and settings via the "Mi Home" app. Actually I think it worked with both apps before I've update the firmware of the camera and then start having the same troubles most of you describe.
