I have been using CalTopo Pro (mobile & web) for several years, tried several others, but coming back to CalTopo. It has the cleanest maps, most customization, and best layers that I have found. I use this for mtn biking, alpine climbing, backcountry skiing, hiking, and just nerding out on maps. The ability to create custom layers is awesome. Ex: I created overlays for each slope aspect which I turn on based on avalanche conditions. With slope shading I reduce risk BC skiing. Thanks Caltopo!!

I used to really like Caltopo. My only problem with it was the inability to "move" tracks between maps. You have to download then reupload. But sometime in the past 6 months, the app has become increasingly buggy. It's ridiculously slow, downloading is almost impossible because the app seems to freeze 95% of the time, and all sorts of other issues. I'm probably going to switch over to Gaia or something else after my subscription is up.

Very good, but hard to create a route on the app. I love the clear topo maps, the tracking and ability to download all the map area info with subscription. Creating a route and getting stats on it is easy on a computer on the website with a mouse, but in the app I can't find a way to select a trail segment to add. So all I get in my route are straight line segments as I tap, not trail segments.

What's new

This release has a change to the way that recorded tracks display on the map, as well as several small bug fixes.

The web version of CalTopo has an overlay called "Your Tracks"; this overlay now also exists in the mobile app. Turn on the Your Tracks overlay and all recorded tracks from your account will display as white lines on the map. You can no longer turn on/off individual tracks from the "Your Tracks" screen.
