heads up for anyone considering this hardware and application. Your device must have a compass or the software will simply calculate all directions as if you are facing north and thus be completely useless. Make sure you have a compass first. you'd be surprised at what devices do not. for instance, all three of my Samsung tablets do not. The app really needs a backup function based on GPS readings.

the latest release has introduced wind dampening and has broken connectivity with the ultrasonic portable device, it will hang on the app and not refresh, and after a restart then fails to connect to the device. additionally the firmware update fails to connect. zero stars if I could but have to pick one star to post. The device is now useless without a functioning app as there is no connection. no updates available, no rollback options available and no eta available either.

It doesn't work well on android. Apparently, it works well on apple. It frequently disconnects and needs to be reconnected , and the customizations of the data fields are lost each time it disconnects. However, having said all that, there's no other way to get this data, which is very useful. so we are stuck with it.
