Your dad is a world-renowned nuclear physicist who writes fantasy short stories in his spare time. One day, while working in the basement, your dad had a little "accident" with one of his experiments. The result was a quantum flux that turned a fantasy world from your dad's imagination into an actual world.
You wake up the morning after your dad's accident to find yourself in a strange fantasy setting. The first thing you ask yourself is: "Dude, where's my life?"
And now you must find a way to escape this bizarre world crafted by your dad's strange imagination.
In so doing, you'll face perils that only a dude could handle.
We wish you the best of luck.
This is Chapter 3 in the ongoing series entitled: The Life And Times Of Seth Serrenson. The first two chapters are available on Google Play and are also free:
Chapter 1: Halls Of The Goblin Lords
Chapter 2: Terror Of The Troll Witch
This game can be enjoyed standalone or played as part of the larger, role playing experience.
[Be advised that the back story below contains spoilers for people who have not played the first two chapters. If you wish to enjoy the full role playing experience, please download and play Halls Of The Goblin Lords and work forward from there.]
You are Seth Serrenson, an ax-wielding ex-mercenary formerly employed by the Viscountess Bayette D'Lasio. She assigned you a quest of locating the mysterious (and underground) goblin halls and destroying the goblin shaman. You did both, but found clues that a recent increase in goblin raids is part of some larger, more sinister plot.
One clue you found was a map to Westmoreland. Another clue was a mysterious potion. Subsequent events indicated that the two clues were related. A weird potion master named Oswego, whom you encountered on the way to Westmoreland, told you that the potion was in fact a poison, and that the map pointed to the well in Westmoreland. Conclusion: Someone wants to poison the well at Westmoreland.
Oswego also told you that the only one who would make such a potion is the dreaded troll witch, who inhabits the caverns of Agolmar. You made your way to those caverns, confronted the troll witch, and cleverly killed him. Before he died, though, he told you that he was contracted to make the potion by someone who bore the crest of House Jaren.
You determine that you still must make your way to Westmoreland, thinking that the answers are there. That is where our story begins...
Combat, combat, and more combat. I have enhanced the combat engine quite a bit. Your opponents can now block, parry, and dodge. You may have noticed some of that from the promo video.
Controls are still intuitive: The joystick is on the lower left. The axe button is your attack button. The foot button is a jump button.
I usually try to make these games easy for casual gamers, but provide a time-based scoring system so hardcore gamers can compete for a high score. The time-based scoring system is still in this game (every level is timed, except for cut scenes), but there are some elements that are a little more challenging in this game. Let's face it: Troll Witch was too easy. I think even the most experienced gamers might have a little trouble with the Lake Mugave level.
Also: All melee combat is to the death. I actually set up an invisible barrier around you and your opponent for all melee combat. One of you is going to die. If your opponent dies, then the barrier is removed. This is to prevent players from just walking past monsters, taking a little damage, and then continuing. That is no more. You are a hero. Act like it.
There are some minor glitches that don't inhibit game play (the ones that I know about, anyway). I will be fixing those in the next release. I really like the enhancements to the combat engine. I've reduced the amount of damage dealt, and increased the health of both you and your opponents. This means that combat lasts longer, which I think is more fun. Remember: Melee combat is always to the death now.
1. Halls Of The Goblin Lords
2. The Terror Of The Troll Witch
3. "If I Whet My Glittering Sword"
All 3 of the previous chapters are available on Google Play and are free. This chapter can be played as a stand-alone game, or enjoyed as part of the larger role-playing experience.
[Warning: Spoilers are below for people who have not played the first 3 chapters!]
An innocent man. You just killed an innocent man.
His name was Barnen. The mayor of Westmoreland, who happens to be Barnen's uncle, sent you to him as a diversion. The mayor, Kjen Jaren, was actually the culprit behind the poisoning of the well at Westmoreland, but he led you to believe it was Barnen.
When you confronted Barnen, he challenged you to a duel in an effort to defend his honor. He lost the fight but kept his honor. You now know that he was innocent.
At the end of the duel, your old friend Kaysa the druid showed up and gave you nothing but bad news: Pretty much everyone in the realm wants to kill you. Also: the well at Westmoreland was successfully poisoned, and Kjen framed you for the foul deed.
The only lead you now have is the one given to you by Barnen before you killed him. He said that he was searching for the Dwarf Supremacists in the ruins of Kirt because two of their members had tried (unsuccessfully) to kill Kjen a couple of weeks earlier. Barnen wanted to find out why.
Now you get to find out why. Our story picks up with you entering the ruins of Kirt in search of the Dwarf Supremacists - who happen to not only be rogues but racist rogues. They believe that dwarves are the supreme race, and have been known to kill people for committing the "crime" of not being dwarves.
But will the cabal of rogues give you the answers that you need, or will they kill you on the spot...?
Things get more interesting here. In this game, you learn some rogue-like skills. You will learn sneak, ventriloquism, and backstab-like maneuver which I refer to as "the gut". You'll also get a chance to practice your new skills.
Other than that, combat is the same as in previous games. The axe icon is what you use to strike. Just make sure that you are facing your enemy and close enough to hit. The foot icon is for jumping. Movement is controlled by the transparent joystick on the lower, left-hand side.
Once again, I struggled to keep it under 50Mb. And, once again, even with the struggle I made it happen. I had some problems with grass textures on the opening scene, which is why you don't see a whole lot of that. But hey, it's a desert environment so a whole lot of grass would be out place, wouldn't it?
There are still a few tweaks that I would like to make for the next release. There are some combat issues that I would like to get cleaned up, and sometimes drinking a healing potion in the middle of combat can cause the animation to go haywire. Those are tough to reproduce, but I'll look at them.
Chapter 1 of this series is called "Halls Of The Goblin Lords" and is available on GooglePlay.
[Be advised that this back story will contain spoilers for people who have not played the first chapter. If you wish to enjoy the full experience, it is strongly advised that you play "Halls Of The Goblin Lords" first.]
You are Seth Serrenson, an axe-wielding (and only axe-wielding) former mercenary once in the employ of the Viscountess Bayette D'Lasio. After a series of goblin raids in your area, she sent you on a quest to locate, and destroy, the goblin shaman who was a leader of the local clans. Using your usual resourcefulness, you penetrated the mysterious Halls Of The Goblin Lords and worked your way through the underground keep to finally locate Gench, the aforementioned shaman.
To accomplish this, you were assisted by an unnamed goblin who feared that Gench was working for a cause contrary to goblin interests. The goblin would tell you no more.
When you finally confronted Gench, he informed you that Bayette had actually sent you to the Halls Of The Goblin Lords so that you would die there. As of now, you have no idea if he was lying or not. He also spoke of a larger plot of which he was a part, seemingly confirming the worries of the unnamed goblin who assisted you. But there were no further details offered as to the exact nature of said plot.
Before escaping the halls, you found two things of importance. One was a map with a Big X marked on a spot near a small village known as Westmoreland. The other item was a potion of unknown contents.
The immediate back story to Chapter 2 is as follows: You decide to work your way towards Westmoreland, hoping to find some answers there. While on your journey, you recall that a hermit-like potionmaster named Oswego has taken up residence near the abandoned Cryssus homestead. Since it is not far out of your way, you think it might be prudent to let Oswego have a look at the potion. Maybe he can identify it.
That is where our story begins...
I think it's safe to say that the controls are fairly standard. That big circle in the lower, left-hand side which looks like a joystick control is actually a joystick control. The "attack" and "jump" icons are on the lower, right-hand side and it should be fairly obvious which is which. The Settings "gear" icon is on the upper, right-hand side. Your score is on the upper, left-hand side.
As with the previous chapter, most people won't have a problem "completing" this chapter. If you're just about accomplishing quests, this should be easy. Hardcore gamers, however, have the option of going for a high score. A couple of levels are timed. The faster you complete them, the better your score. There also what I laughingly call "side quests" - optional opportunities to pick up treasure and kill more monsters, all of which gives you a higher score.
So... where is the health bar? There is no health bar. When you get injured, you hear a heartbeat. The more you get injured, the louder the heartbeat.
As usual, I scrimped and cut as much as possible to get this thing under Google's 50Mb limit. Lots of normal maps had to go away. Heck, the troll witch itself was over 10Mb!
I used three separate terrains as well - each one taking about 2.5Mb. So I had to cut a lot to get under the magic number. But I did it - just barely.
I hope to continue this series.
You are Seth Serrenson, former mercenary and now a ward of the Viscountess Bayette D'Lasio. She provides you with free room and board in exchange for your services: You are attempting to uncover the truth about who it is that murdered her husband.
Lately, though, your services have taken a different turn. You have been tasked with retaliating against goblins, whose raids on the nearby villages have become more frequent.
So, armed with only your favorite hand-axe, you move in on a group of goblins to save a small town currently under attack.
That's where our story begins.
Game play involves some action and fighting, but some of it is also problem-solving (read: puzzles and riddles). I tried to code the game so that casual gamers can complete it, but hardcore gamers can opt for the challenge of getting a higher score by killing more goblins in challenging environments.
Most of the combat play should be fairly intuitive. The axe icon represents Seth's axe, and it is the only weapon he will use in this game. You have to, of course, be in close proximity to an enemy to successfully hit him when you attack him.
The joystick on the left controls movement. There is also a jump button (the one that looks like a foot).
Please note that there are also "dialogue trees" in this game. People who play RPGs regularly will know all about this. You will be having a conversation with someone in the game, and you will be presented with options for your part of the dialogue. You can pick any one of the options BUT YOU MUST PICK ONE. Simply touch the option to select it.
I put some code in place to prevent the camera from going through the walls in the dungeon. It works about 70-80% of the time. When it does work, it simply zooms in on the back of Seth's head. This is just to prevent the camera from going outside of the dungeon. Sometimes it doesn't work, and I'll look at that for the next game.
If this is received fairly well, I'll go ahead and crank out a sequel. I already have the outline for that in mind.
As usual, I cut corners as much as possible to get under Google's 50Mb limit. And we just barely made it this time!
Any issues, feel free to drop me an email.
No need for a tracball, you simply tap the screen where you want your photons to explode!
Not sure if I made it too easy. If so, then I'll just update the app and clear the high scores. You get what you pay for! :)
Tested it on an HTC and a Samsung mid-sized tablet. Looks good on those. Tested it on the Unity emulator and it looked good there. The biggest struggle is adapting the UI to all the different Droid resolutions and pixel densities. Sigh. Please let me know if I missed anything.
The application will display a list of photos which match the keyword, then you can click on the thumbnail from the list to view a larger photo.
In the larger photo screen, you can actually click on a link to view the photo in Flickr.
You can set search preferences by clicking on the "Settings" icon, which is in the upper, left-hand corner.
I didn't know what to display for an intro screen, so I just provided you with a picture of a panda.
