BIOURB NATUR responds to a set of challenges and opportunities that arise on both sides of the Spanish-Portuguese border.
Specifically, natural parks and protected areas have, in the current transboundary context, a common demographic dynamic marked by aging and population loss as well as a growing reduction in activity.
BIOURB NATUR intends to develop actions that are contrary to this trend based on the study of local heritage, in its multiple aspects (natural, building, cultural, etc.), developing intervention proposals with specific actions aimed at stimulating multiple activities ( tourism, construction, etc.), favoring the development of cooperation territories in this process.
- Respond to a growing awareness that tourism practices must promote sustainability, responding positively to new global challenges (e.g. climate changes and preservation of natural resources).
- Train local agents to cover the need to incorporate new, more sustainable practices responding to a local demand, which is difficult to achieve from the limited installed capacity in these territories.
- Offering the opportunity to capitalize on the skills and knowledge that result from the BIOURB project, reinforcing the actions and expanding with the application of knowledge and techniques in a complementary framework of relevance, such as natural parks and their natural and cultural resources.
- Strengthen the tourist offer in protected natural spaces, by improving or rehabilitating high-value buildings, whose potential can be increased or, in some cases, created with the project.
