I made it to the beach.
After selling the software business I co-founded out of college, the plan was to hit the beach with my kids, listen to crashing waves and watch beautiful sunsets over the Pacific.
I just had a few "to do" items to knock down first. The most important one was to set up the software systems for my wife’s new dental practice. How hard could that be? I developed and sold enterprise software and ran a 100+ person organization for 20 years. I did cloud software before it was called cloud. Her team was less than 5 people. A couple weeks and I'd be back to the beach I thought.
This was my first mistake and the beginning of the ClearSteps story.
I implemented the standard workflow systems fast. Patient management, bookkeeping, time clock, CRM, office tool, image management, and network security were easy enough to do. I was proud and the beach was calling.
Her business quickly grew and the software scaled beautifully, but the people didn’t. It wasn’t long before I realized that all the same growing pains from my old 100+ person tech company were the same as for my wife’s now 10 person dental practice.
Employee turnover, covering for sick & vacation time, overlooked assignments, new hire training, conflicting priorities were all the same frustrations I’d fought before. I was determined to get ahead of these headaches and searched for a cost effective solution to solve these problems before they got too big. I came up empty.
So I decided I would build a mobile cloud solution to help me get back to the beach. I called a talented friend, scoped out what I wanted, set the time table and ordered my new beach chair for when we were done. This was my second mistake that moved the beach further away.
My vision was simple. I wanted to take out my phone and look at one screen for peace of mind that the business was running smoothly.
The boss screen was easy, the challenge was how to populate it. I dove head first into the world of org theory, business management and human performance. I returned to my roots at UCLA and met with leaders in the field to learn more. I consumed an enormous number of books, blogs and podcasts. Slowly, I began to spot common themes among top performers. We tried, failed and improved many things in the software trying to get it right.
The result is ClearSteps and its power goes way beyond ending the common frustrations of business owners.
The ClearSteps system enables organizations to successfully grow their business more profitably than ever.
This is done by helping team’s execute strategy to near perfection. Once mistakes are eliminated, ClearSteps provides a platform for constant innovation driven by an empowered team. Over time, this combination gives any business the power to push ahead of its competition.
I now have time to run a successful business and play on the beach - and you can too.
