About this app

Difficulty finding the right proportions when drawing?

Sight Size is an app for comparing images. Using the app one can transparently view two images at the same time, and also to adjust the images so that they can be seen in the same scale. This is similar to viewing the images on a traditional light table.

The app is intended as a learning tool when drawing or painting. Then the first image would be a reference image of the object being drawn (for example, a face or a landscape), and the second image would be an image of the drawing (drawn with pen and paper). By seeing both images transparently over each other and at the same scale, one can see where the drawing is off, and which parts need to be corrected. This is not always easy to see otherwise.

The name Sight Size comes from a classical method of drawing where the subject and the drawing are placed so that from a fixed vantage point, they the can be compared at the same scale.

Instructions

After a image has been selected in both the subject and overlay tabs, the images can compared after tapping the image in the overlay screen. Then the following controls are available:

Slider: Adjust transparency of images

Lock/Unlock: Locks images so they can be panned and zoomed either independently or locked together

Black and white mode: This can be particularly useful for finding the areas of darkest shadows vs. lightest light.

Mirror mode: Get a fresh look by viewing everything in a mirror view.

Great app. I use this often for scaling up drawings onto walls when painting murals. I would give this 5 stars if you were able to rotate the images. This is a very key element missing from the app and means your reference image has to be photographed at the exact angle you want to scale it up to..... this may be missing because I use the app differently to how it probably was created.. thanks so much for created this app ...its has been a great help

The app is very simple to use and is overall great! The apps features are simple yet effective for an artist to match their art to a reference for proportion checking - helping artists improve their proportion skills through matching their reference subject image and their drawn image in the overlay. Clicking the overlay gives you features to make matching the image much easier - like locking the images, reversing them etc. One very useful feature is the help button - you get stuck trying to work it out, the help button also provides instructions telling you about the program and the features. Only suggestion I would give is to make it more obvious you're meant to click the overlay button to see if the images match as well as some expansion on the features (more colour filters, being able to only use one reference etc), otherwise it's perfect for what it does! - Rose Edwards
